An olive garden manager's extreme approach to workers' free time backfired spectacularly.

An anonymous caller emailed employees at an Overland Park, Kansas restaurant about the "incredible speed" with which the employees were closing, which was later widely mocked on social media.

The manager told employees that absences "for any reason," including family emergencies, illness and the death of a pet, would no longer be tolerated.

“If your dog dies, you should bring it in and test it out,” he said. "If you are sick, you must come to us and prove it."

The manager told the staff that if they couldn't handle it, they should work elsewhere, adding, "I hope you decide to continue working here and I think we're making [management] as easy as possible for all of you." .

The manager also cited his record of never taking a day off in his 11 1/2 years at Olive Garden, adding that he has worked through sick days and even made it to work on time despite "disruptive" accidents in his car. . . . .

- Do you think I want to stay here until midnight on Friday and Saturday? She continued. "No. I'd rather be home with my husband and dog, go to the movies, or see my family. But no, I dedicate myself to being here. The way it should be."

Screenshots of the rant went viral, sparking discussions about bad managers and presenteeism, the task of continuing to work with low productivity as a measure of productivity.

Some Reddit users said that working sick puts other employees and even customers at risk, especially in the restaurant industry. Others pointed out that zero days off in 11 years "wasn't flexibility" and "was nothing to be proud of."

“For me, the funniest thing is that he got fired. He has so much 'loyalty' and poof that it's all for nothing,” another user wrote.

Olive Garden bosses fired the manager with immediate effect Tuesday, local news station KCTV reported.

An Olive Garden spokesperson said the message "is not consistent with [the company's] values."

"We are committed to providing a supportive and respectful work environment for our team members... We can confirm that we are saying goodbye to this manager."
