Community Seeks To Buy Land To Keep Maplewood Garden For Immigrants Going

Maple, Minnesota. - A community garden in Maplewood is trying to buy the land it currently leases to make sure it doesn't disappear. Under the snow, the parks of Cedar Street sleep.

"We've been looking for a park like this for a long time," said Hti Duh, an immigrant from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. "I really do."

The park, which awaits spring, serves 260 families and more than 1,000 people.

“I come from Africa,” said Abraham Watson, “from agriculture.” "So there's something about me that everywhere I go, I have to plant something."

Every summer day, immigrants from different countries walk hand in hand.

"I usually jokingly call it UNO Park because we have people from every continent," Watson said.

“I am very happy every time I come to the garden. We also brought a lot of food and met a lot of friends," Pu Puai said through an interpreter.

The future of the park is uncertain. St. Paul owns the land but can sell it. Rice Street Gardens is trying to buy it. The founder saw the effect firsthand.

"It seems like family health and mental well-being are finally in balance," said Ronald Peterson, one of the organization's founders. “Everyone contributes to it. So I really believe why we need this park to continue.

St. Paul has informed WCCO that they are in no rush to sell the land and will not be using the land for their own purposes for the next few years.

"We're trying to raise a million dollars, which is crazy because we need a lot of small contributions and a lot of big contributions," Peterson said.

"We feel a great connection to the people and the culture to the culture," Doh said.

Building a great business is a great goal. Rice Street Gardens will meet with the Board of Water Commissioners in mid-February to discuss plans to purchase the property. Click here for more information on our fundraising.
