Gardening for beginners doesn't have to be difficult. If you want to start your first garden but don't know where to start, these ten easy gardening tips and tricks will be of great help to new gardeners.
Simple gardening tips and tricks to help your garden grow
Growing a garden can be very rewarding, but there are a few things to consider before you get started.
1. Start small and manageable
Gardens are hard work and the work is getting bigger and bigger. You have to have time to plant, water, weed, harvest and prepare, so learning small means a lot. Even in a small garden you can grow a lot of food. You'd be surprised how much food you can grow in a 4 x 8 or even 4 x 4 raised bed. Keep the first year short so you're not afraid to try again.
2. Grow the fruits and vegetables your family eats
It's very easy to go into a nice seed catalog and order a variety of seeds, but keep it simple for the first year. If you don't like zucchini, there's no reason to plant it. If you want, I'll let you skip the courgette.
3. Plant these seeds in the garden itself
Some plants do well when planted as seeds. And some should be planted as plants. Knowing the difference will make a big difference in your success and save you a lot of money. Seeds are much cheaper than plants. The following ten common vegetables can be planted directly from seed and will do just fine.
Follow the instructions on the back of the seed packet and plant at the correct time of year, using the correct spacing and depth. Be sure to water the garden after planting the seeds, as seeds need water to germinate.
- carrot
- But
- cucumber
- beans
- pea
- a thousand
- Radish
- spinach
- watermelon
- Zucchini/zucchini
4. Plant
It is best to plant seeds from the following six trees. They have a long growing season and must be well rooted to bear fruit. Also, be sure to plant with optimal spacing and depth requirements. After planting, your plant needs to be well watered so that the roots of the plant have everything they need to really take root. Most plants need about an inch of water per week, so watch out for rain and water your garden as needed.
- the tomato
- pepper
- Broccoli
- cauliflower
- cabbage
- Brussels sprouts
5. Buy seedlings from a nursery instead of trying to start your own.
Identifying seeds can be fun and very helpful, but if you're new to gardening, it's easier and more convenient to buy plants at the store. It might even be cheaper in the long run.
6. Know the date of frost and the area of the garden .
Planting your garden at the right time is very important, so go to this first and last frost calculator , enter your zip code and find out when it's safe to plant your garden. Freezing kills plants, so make sure you know this very important detail. You also want to know what your garden is like, as certain plants grow better in certain areas. Go here to discover your garden area .
7. Choose a good garden.
Most plants need full sun (at least six hours of sun a day), so keep that in mind when choosing where to plant your garden. You definitely want to avoid trees and consider tall hedges or any other plants that might shade your yard.
8. Keep a garden journal.
If you want to garden, it's important to learn from your mistakes. Track what you plant, when you plant it, how it grows and how it harvests. This will help you plan your future garden. This is the amazing garden journal I have.
9. Don't forget the mulch
Garden mulch will help retain moisture and keep weeds at bay. All of your plants will benefit from mulch, so be sure to include it in your garden. Straw, grass clippings, and wood chips can make good mulch, and sometimes you can find free mulch .
10. Spend time in your garden every day.
Did you know I wrote my first book? You will love my new book, a home economics textbook and cookbook. If you want to take the next step toward self-sufficiency, learn how to raise your own chickens for meat. Or, if raising chickens for meat isn't your thing, you can also learn how to use all the chicken in your kitchen to save money and help your family go a little greener.
