Master Gardener: Square Foot Gardening A Great Way To Teaches Kids About Gardening

Square Foot Gardening is an easy way to get kids involved in gardening, including measurements, volume, spatial relationships, plant life cycles, plant needs and types, types of seeds and how to plant them, the season, and the cause and effect capabilities of the area. , identifying beneficial or harmful insects and the joy of harvest. These are some of the topics that can be covered in the Montgomery County AgriLife Extension Children's Discovery Garden. We give children the experience of growing their own produce so they can develop their own garden at home or at school. Three square feet will give nine lots for planting various things. How we can guide them:

1. Students should first calculate and measure the size of the flower bed and how many areas they want to plant, then decide on the materials to make the flower bed.

2. After construction, they can estimate the cubic foot size of each plot and how much soil, compost, and bone meal to add.

3. Next, they can use rope and stakes to square the beds where the crop will grow. At Discovery Gardens' Square Foot Garden, we plant three crops a year: spring, fall and winter.

4. After deciding what to plant and when, students learn what types of seeds to plant, what they need and how to plant them. For example, a cantaloupe may require more space with one seed placed in the center of a plot, while a radish may occupy 16 evenly spaced spaces in a plot. You also need to determine if the plant will grow over the fence and, if so, where it should be planted so that it does not block the sun from other plants. Examples that may require a tab are beans, squash, melons, etc.

Seed germination will introduce plant parts and their functions, classifications such as monocots and dicots, related groups and families, photosynthesis and reproduction, and the life cycles of different plants. The biggest reward is cutting and eating their produce.
