Spring is only a week away, which means... we've officially jumped ahead. I hope you change your working hours!
More and more people are bringing them into their gardens... but how can they grow these plants in a warm climate?
Growing anything in the desert can be a challenge... and some plants give the best results. As spring approaches and more people want to shape their gardens, we turn to the experts to hone your gardening skills.
There is a large greenhouse in the middle of an apartment complex in East Las Vegas. It's called botany.
And here you will find a wide variety of plants, from the common cacti and succulents to other prized plants… some of which are native to Indonesia and Thailand.
But how do you start your own greenhouse or garden in this desert climate?
"You can buy a small greenhouse to put in your garden. Make sure there is enough shade, especially in the hot and very hot months," says Botanica Director Christina Sforza.
She said don't forget to water the plants... just make sure you don't over-water them.
“Just giving them enough water, enough light and enough love will definitely help these plants thrive here,” says Sforza.
As we know, desert lands are not California, for example... where avocados, lemons and roses grow in summer. This is why Sforza lives in the desert, so having a greenhouse could be the right choice. Depending on the type of plant and where you plant it, it can make a big difference in how it grows. Don't forget to add potting soil.
People like Jennifer Villafuerte are taking gardening one step further.
"A green thumb is on its way," says Villafuerte. "I hope to have a garden in the future and grow and produce my own vegetables. But now I keep them indoors with indoor plants."
If not a greenhouse, maybe a plant or two...
"Maybe it's just an indoor fern. Seeing what works and what doesn't... I'm looking for some ideas to spruce up my apartment," says Chern Chong.
And if you just stop to look...
"Take your lunch and go with the fish," said Sforza. "We do house tours, plant maintenance, plant rentals."
It doesn't need a green thumb, he says, to keep plants alive. Plants are like friends, they just need regular care.
