Most people are familiar with the most famous stadium in the world: Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, and some of you may have heard of the Boston Gardens in Beantown, but did you know that Long Island once had its own garden? ?
In 1957, Island Gardens was built in West Hempstead at the corner of Hempstead Turnpike and Cherry Valley Avenue. The plaza predates the Nassau Coliseum, which opened in 1972, and Commack's Long Island Arena, which opened in 1959.
Located in the middle of a Nassau County suburb, the 5,200-seat stadium owned by West Hempstead's Arnold "Whitey" Carlson entertained Long Islanders until it was recently demolished. 50 years ago.
"I thought at the time that Island Paradise was our neighborhood movie theater," said Susan Raiza, 70, who grew up in West Hempstead. "Looking back now, I appreciate the amazing things I saw there. It's really shocking."
Louis Lisitra from West Hempstead, 70, added: "The island garden was a real presence for us. It was easy to go to the concert. In fact, it was far from my house. I got to see the group which turned out to be great
Inselgarten has served many purposes over the last 16 years. Here's a sample of what LI saw:
Initial mesh length
Island Gardens received a major boost in 1969 when the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association (ABA) moved out of Long Island Arena.
"The Long Island Arena in Commack was not good for basketball because it was cold due to the ice underneath," said Malvern's Paul Brandel. “During the game, the players wore winter coats and sat on the sidelines. The condensation from the ice made them slide everywhere.
"These guys really wanted a chance," added sportscaster Al Trotwig, 67, of Sag Harbor. "Being in the ABA back then was a small thing.
A highlight of the Nets' tenure was on October 3, 1971, when they faced the Boston Celtics in their first NBA (National Basketball Association) interleague game. (The rival leagues officially merged in 1976.)
A last second shot by Bill Melchioni [116-115] won the net. The place has gone wild! They thought they won the Olympic gold medal,” Brandel said. “I remember [Celtic star] Dave Cowens walking off the field shaking his head in belief.
Tickets weren't easy or affordable ($1 to $5), but players were accessible even to fans.
"I got a quote from Rick Barry once when he left the game after scoring 48 in Paradise, Iceland," said John Kingston, 66, of Carl Plus. “I went up to him on the bench and he gave me his script. That would never happen at Madison Square Garden.
Fans will remember special nights like the night of the dance, where the ABA's signature red, white and blue basketballs were distributed.
"They were a great game," said Truvig, who worked as a ballboy for the Nets as a teenager.
The group held a turkey night in November 1968 where they gave away 500 frozen turkeys.
"They called the ticket number," said Kevin VanMeter, 70, who grew up in Franklin Square. The winners went home with a 14-pound turkey.
Concerts: DC5, Dylan, Cream and more.
Several classic rock bands have taken the stage at Island Gardens, with tickets ranging from $3 to $6. On November 17, 1965, the Dave Clark Five met a group of fans as the British band The Invasion took the stage.
"A lot of girls were screaming and it was hard to hear them," said Larry Durso, 68, of Paradise City South. “You couldn't put the music right. It was wonderful
When Bob Dylan went electric, his tour stopped at Island Gardens on February 26, 1966.
Growing Up Charlie Savage Charlie Savage, 73, opened with an acoustic set, performing songs like "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and "Blowin' in the Wind." Garden City Park. "Her second set was electric and used the Hawks as her backing band, which eventually became known as The Band."
After opening for the Byrds on March 25, 1966, the Rascals performed their own show on May 13, 1967.
"We got down to business on Long Island," says singer and keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, 80. "Island Gardens was a special place. You don't often see a stage in the middle of a nice suburban neighborhood.
The band members had strong ties to Long Island. They started playing at The Barge in Southampton. In the summer of 1965 they signed with Atlantic Records.
"Island Paradise was a welcome sight and a real event," said Woodbury guitarist Gene Cornish, 78.
On June 14, 1968, guitarist Eric Clapton, drummer Ginger Baker, and the trio known as "Cream" were born.
“The team started very late. While they were playing, the singer came in and continued with the first song. "The PA system sounded like it had broken, so the band played," said Don Celenza, 69, of West Hempstead, who attended the concert. "Despite the lack of sound, I thought it was great because the evening revolved around Clapton's guitar."
On March 7, 1969, guitar legend Jeff Beck took Jeff Beck to Island Gardens on his "Truth" tour with Rod Stewart and Nicky Hopkins on piano. Savoy Brown and Mountain opened the show.
Donald E., 70, of Franklin Square. attended the event. "I'm a guitarist myself, and Beck was definitely an inspiration to me," Jones said. "In fact, it was thanks to him that I bought my first wah-wah pedal."
Sly and the Family Stone call the Inselgarten "Halt!" and "Everyday People" on November 8, 1969.
"It was a crazy event," said Lysitra, who was in the audience. "There was a lot of movement between the seats and non-smoking traffic."
Other concerts included a three-piece jazz festival with Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington in 1958, Johnny Cash in 1965, and Blood, Sweat and Tears and Procol Harem in 1969.
circus every year
Every spring the circus came to the Jardin de Lille. But it's Ringling Bros. And not the best of Barnum & Bailey Circus, but Wirth Circus or LN Fleckless & Co. It was more realistic that way. For $1 to $4 per ticket, visitors can see acts such as tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, bearded women, sword swallowers, fire eaters, and Siberian tigers with their trainers.
"If you get there early, you can go backstage to see the animals and find the toys," says Lycitra. "It was unbelievable for a kid."
Patrick Flannery, 57, of Farmingdale, remembers riding elephants with his father and sister as a child.
"It was an interesting experience," recalls Flannery. “They had a box on top of the elephant and there were six people inside. You have to climb stairs to get there. It was fun."
The grand finale was a surprise.
"Finally, some guy in a white uniform shot him across the stage with a cannon," said Bruce Glover, 72, of Greenlawn.
Bruno, Bobo and friends
Professional wrestling took off in the late '60s and early '70s and Island Paradise became the scene of colorful matches featuring stars like Haystacks Calhoun, Arnold "Golden Boy" Scandal, Bobo Brazil, Buddy Rogers and the Fabulous tag team. Kangaroos.
"Bruno Sammartino was everyone's favorite because he always had a crowd," said Ed Frederick, 66, of Malvern. "He really brought the case!"
People get so excited that they throw snow cones at the bad guys.
"Everybody thought it was real during wrestling," said Gerard Passero, 67, of Long Beach. "People cry when their favorite fighter gets hurt."
Other sporting events that fill the island's gardens include roller derby, indoor rodeo, car racing, and boat shows.
political protest
Prominent politicians, including Robert Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., attended rallies in Icelandic gardens in the 1960s.
King spoke in 1965 with civil rights activists Baird Rustin, John Lewis, and Lincoln Lynch. After visiting six Nassau County communities, King addressed a packed house and delivered a 40-minute speech that focused on criticism of government failure. The distance poll tax is part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
"I find it very unfortunate that the Senate of this country refuses to immediately repeal the poll tax in state elections," Dr. Rey said according to Newsday. “Our president [Lyndon B. Johnson] heard that anything that interferes with the right to vote should be repealed. I hold that the captain's right to vote is an obstacle.
In 1964, Kennedy, then a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate, addressed a meeting of Radio and Electrical Machine Workers International, Local 450, and promised to help rebuild the region's model economy.
"I'm going to try Nassau County," Kennedy said, according to Newsday. "I'm rooting for Suffolk County. I'm fighting for EUI."
Four years later, Kennedy, now a senator, was running for president and again stood on the West Hempstead stage for 45 minutes.
“Mr. Kennedy talked about improving roads and public lighting. He promised to help Long Island and I agreed with him," VanMeter said. He was very attractive."
school event
From high school basketball games to graduation ceremonies, Island Gardens has played host to a number of local school events.
Christopher Lockwood, 68, who grew up in Oyster Bay, attended a St. Dominic High School basketball game in February 1970, where former kicking coach and current University of Iona Bayville basketball coach Rick Pitino , played point guard.
"If we had the 3-point shooting rule, Rick would have set the record for how well he could shoot," Lockwood said.
When West Hempstead High School graduated 365 students in June 1970, a silent podium made a political statement.
"We had a piece of cloth with a black peace symbol tied around our wrists to protest the Vietnam War," Riza said.
Lisitra added: “They had no control over us even though they told us we were going to be deported. My parents raised their eyebrows, but what should they do? I am 18 years old.
Not just hot dogs
The Island Garden offering was your typical menu of hot dogs, popcorn and soda. However, there were a few items that stood out from the usual fare, such as white chocolate cones, sundae cones, and tri-flavor sundaes in one cone.
"The cones looked like houses on Cape Cod," recalled Joe Marinello, 66, of West Hempstead, who started gardening on the island at age 10, selling shows and concessions. "They're filled with chocolate and a cherry on top."
Before and after the show, people flocked to Bourbon Street, a fast food joint across from Island Garden that was also owned by Carlson. The space was decorated with memorabilia from the 1964–65 New York World's Fair, including games like skee-ball, pinball, and hoops.
"It had a long counter and looked like something you'd see at Coney Island, except on the inside," Brandel said. "They will have separate areas for hot dogs, burgers, sodas, sandwiches, pizza, shakes and fries. Seating will be picnic tables. All food will be served cafeteria style."
off
Island Paradise closed in 1973 when the Nets moved their operations to Uniondale and made the Nassau Coliseum their new home.
“It made sense for the Nets to go to the Nassau Coliseum. It was a completely different world,” Treutwig said. "They were knocking on the door of the Major Leagues."
"When they moved into the Nassau Coliseum, it was like coming home," added former Newsday photographer David Pokras, 70, of Farmingdale.
