Until next time
Mike Pyle, designer and co-host of HGTV's Inside Out, shares his tips and expertise on how to wow your home spaces at the OKC Fairgrounds this weekend at the Oklahoma City Home + Garden Show.
The show, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Bennett Event Center, will showcase the latest trends in home improvement, interior design and landscaping. More than 300 exhibitors will showcase customized products and services for renovating living spaces, gardens, patios and multipurpose spaces.
With the ever-changing housing market and people concerned about declining home values, we thought we'd ask Pyle for advice on how to use design to help maintain the value of your home. He has 20 years of experience in landscaping, designing and creating outdoor living spaces.
Q: What types of landscaping retain value and add/maintain value to a home?
Answer: Planting drought-tolerant, water-tolerant plant material and planting with enough room for future growth will limit the need for excessive maintenance or repairs in the short and long term.
Q: What can a homeowner do in terms of home design?
Answer: Following the current trends and using a neutral color palette, renovating and redecorating floors is essential.
Q: What can owners do?
Answer: Add value to the outdoors by creating outdoor moments using summer kitchens, fire pits and gazebos.
Q: What is legacy landscape/epidemic design?
Answer: Create more space by purchasing a houseplant to extend the inside of your home out and back.
Q: How is this real estate crisis different from previous ones and how is it affecting the landscaping industry?
A : During the last recession, we saw consumers limit their spending on external improvements; However, despite worries about the current economic situation, we are seeing that customers are not afraid to invest in their looks and upgrade their homes as the market returns.
