Matt West has been baking in the sun since the dawn of the internet.
He said he was inspired when he was a little boy and saw someone make a solar-powered hot dog for the first time. That thought drove him.
"I was a little boy at a Cub Scout event," West said. "Someone had made a bag out of paper and cardboard, like a cereal box, you know, with a wire sticking out, and there was a sausage on that wire."
West started a Facebook group called Solar Cooking – Do It Yourself, bringing together like-minded people who cook with solar energy from around the world.
People from Minnesota, California and even Ohio to Haiti and Kenya.
Some say they want to test their ability to cook eco-friendly, while others say solar cooking has saved their communities in more ways than one.
West and others design solar cookers using aluminum panels, metals, and different angles to capture sunlight.
This creates a kind of reaction in the oven and allows the food to cook like it would in a stove or oven. It will take time, but West and others say it will be worth it.
“We share a passion to help the world save the planet in any way we can. We all have a common competition to see who can solve these problems," West said.
West says he won't stop spreading his message. He believes everyone should try to cook solar food. He believes solar cooking allows others to do what they thought was impossible.
"It's a bigger goal to see my ideas spread around the world," West said.
