Antitrust Stalwart David Cicilline To Retire From House In June

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. Rep. David Sechelen will resign on June 1, leaving House Democrats without one of their most aggressive advocates on antitrust issues related to technology, fairness and accountability.

Ciciline, who was re-elected to a seventh term in November with 64% of the vote, plans to lead the Rhode Island organization. He will be replaced in a special election.

Ciciline, 61, served as chairman of the House Antitrust Subcommittee in 2019, where he led efforts to seize control of America's biggest tech platforms. He led investigations against Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. , formerly known as Facebook. In the fall of 2020, the group released a landmark report on the dominance of US tech platforms, and Ciciline led a bipartisan coalition pushing antitrust laws against the companies over the next two years.

As one of the few openly gay members of Congress, Chichell is outspoken about LGBTQ rights. He is sponsoring the Equality Act, which would include sexual orientation and gender identity in the expanded definition of federal civil rights. The law is passed by the House of Representatives, not by the Senate.

Selin was former President Donald Trump's impeachment manager during his second impeachment trial. This year, he joined a group of LGBTQ lawmakers who introduced a resolution to remove New York Rep. George Santos from office.

In November 2022, Ciciline withdrew his nomination for Deputy Democratic Leader after finishing fourth among House Democrats. Representative James Claiborne of South Carolina won the role.
