The beloved city's popular garden store nursery had its last day after 35 years in Seattle's Madison Valley area.
"This house, this space and place becomes a kind of home," said Alison Green, owner of City People's Garden Shop. The store has been home to many of the area's residents for more than three decades.
"People tell me all the time where I'm going to get spring greens, where I'm going to buy groceries, where I'm going to go," Green says. “There are plenty of other garden shops here and I'm sure they will find their way. We don't even know where we will shop."
KING 5's Brady Wakayama spoke with Green last September when the business was expected to close later this year. He can extend the lease for several months. But after years of delays, the real estate development company that bought the garden store's leased property in 2016 is finally planning to move forward with its original plans to build apartment buildings and retail space using the mix
"It's still hard," Green said. "We knew we would never live in this country."
This made life difficult not only for Green and his employees. Customers are also heartbroken by the closure.
"We can only come in once a week to buy the last change, which is sad," says regular John Kobinski. "We're definitely going to miss him and we're not sure where we go from here."
Green appreciates the love and support of the community over the years as he continues to work to keep this business alive.
"We want to continue this legacy, we want to take this park, the space, the place and the energy that is here, we want to pack it up and take it with us, find new places and make it more like the others. . Green said.
