Closing Monroe Animal Shelter Said It Plans To Adopt Out Or Send Remaining Animals To Sanctuaries

MONROE -- After a flood of help, a local animal shelter closing said it plans to take most of the dogs and cats into its care and send the rest to a shelter or other animal shelter, a volunteer said.

Compton said Saturday the shelter is now holding "meetings" to try and match the remaining animals with new families. In total, the shelter wants to take in 17 dogs and nine cats.

It is not yet known how many dogs will spend their days in the shelter. According to Compton, some are unacceptable due to factors such as their bite history.

"Hopefully most of them will be able to go with their families," he said, noting that the shelter is still accepting applications from people who want to adopt.

The shelter held an event Saturday for owners to learn about the animals the shelter plans to adopt.

"He has to pick the dogs and they pick the dog," Compton said. "So far we've had a very good relationship."

Compton said the "overwhelming response" from people hearing about the shelter's closure made the shelter a "meet and greet" on Saturday, noting that it was not an adoption event. Instead, potential owners fill out an application and then meet their potential pet.

"We've definitely had people say if we let them take their dog home on Saturday, they will," Compton said. However, the shelter still requires applicants to be screened, including verifying that tenants have permission from the owner to keep a dog.

On Saturday, a dog returned to its new family that was given up a month ago. They also took five cats with them.

Compton said she's heard concerns from people who fear the rest of the animals could die if the shelter doesn't find homes in time. But she said the shelter continues to raise money through GoFundMe to send animals that can't be adopted to a shelter or other shelter.

“We are very grateful for the community support,” he added.
