The Language Of Plants: At Kauai Botanical Garden, Native Fauna ‘call Out To These Artists

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- Kauai's annual meeting brings together artists who create beautiful illustrations of the plants that grow and bloom in the National Tropical Botanic Garden.

The garden houses the world's largest collection of native Hawaiian flora.

“This garden is in a great location and all the plants are waiting here. They call us,” says botanical illustrator Wendy Hollender. He created an art project bearing the Latin word florilegium.

“It means a collection of flora or plants from a particular garden that have been documented together,” he said.

Daisy Chung is one of the artists who returned this year to paint plants and learn from other artists who freely share their techniques.

“Everyone has slightly different techniques. Someone starts with graphite, someone with a colored pencil. Most of them use watercolor while painting on paper. Some use digital tools to create their sketches,” he said.

Drawing sessions last two weeks. The artists meet in a large studio and work side by side.

Hollender came up with it because he wanted to give botanical illustrators the opportunity to meet other people who share the same craft.

“I wanted to work with some of the world's most famous botanical artists from all over the world, from Japan to Australia. I admired this work. And I was curious, “Hey, how did they do that? he knows, he said.

They do more than create beautiful images; Artists study the plants they work on, so each piece tells a story.

“Getting to know your plant and capturing that information in an illustration is the hardest part, but also the most rewarding,” Chang said.

Le rassemblement de Tales is produced at this time of the year. Hollander says that qu'elle ne manque jamais d'être Wonder Par les Plants qui ne requireent qu'à être peintes.

“Color, smell, look. You can't take your eyes off him," he said.

An exhibition of paintings, etc. is open to the public on Thursday until the end of the month at the Calaheo Botanical Research Center.

You can meet the artists and buy a print for your collection.

“They can be bought online or at the gift shop at the main entrance to the botanical garden,” Hollender said.

The proceeds go to support the scientific and environmental programs of the garden.

And be careful. The next book, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the National Tropical Botanic Garden, will feature the work of many artists.
