Wildlife Garden Ideas: 25 Ways To Transform Your Plot Into A Naturefriendly Space

Creating your own mini natural pond is very easy and can be very useful for wildlife viewing.

Experts give their advice on how to do this:

1) "Start by finding or buying a large container to hold the water you need for the pond," says Chris Bonnet of GardeningExpress.co.uk. It can be a special form of garden center, an old sink, a dishwasher holder or a plant pot. However, it must be strong enough to withstand being outdoors all year round, especially during heavy snowfall.

2) ``Once you've got the pot up, it's time to dig a hole deep enough for the pot to sit in the ground,'' says Chris. Leveling the container with soil will allow different animals to enter and exit. However, those who want a raised pool can add plants, bricks, and rocks around the edges to provide footing for wildlife.

3) "Then fulfill your blessing!" The RSPB team said. Tap water contains many chemicals that are not good for swimming pools, so use rainwater whenever possible.

4) "It will then be ready for planting," continued the RSPB. It is best to plant the plants in special hydroponic plant containers with mesh sides and low nutrient soil mixed with sand. For small ponds, use only two or three plants or they will crowd.

5) The RSPB advises that 'submerged pond grass is essential to help keep ponds clean'. "And always use native plants in ponds," they add Collection of hornwort and milfoil is recommended in England. You can buy them from garden centers or specialist pond suppliers. It is a good idea to plant marginal native plants around edges and outcrop to provide perches and shelter for wildlife. Make sure you use plants that won't overpower such a small space. Try plants like forget-me-nots, hollyhocks and marigolds.

6) Be sure to provide a way for wildlife to easily enter and exit the pond. Use bricks, stones or logs, says the RSPB. "Think: 'If I were a hedgehog, could I get out of here?'" they added.
