Organizing a fruit production initiative workshop

Workshop "Getting Started with Fruit Trees" Jan. 7, 9 a.m. to noon at Alan Chadwick Gardens, 239 McLaughlin Dr., Santa Cruz.

Learn how to organically select, plant, grow and care for healthy and productive deciduous fruit trees from Professor Orrin Martin, garden manager Alan Chadwick and author of Fruit Trees for Every Garden.

Planting a fruit tree should be an act of thought, yet people often pick up a tree, pick up a shovel, dig a hole, and plant a tree. Most fruit trees are the result of poor planning or no planning at all.

In this workshop, we will look at the "preconditions" necessary for healthy plants. With those basics out of the way, we'll head out into the garden for a hands-on demonstration that includes installation and maintenance.
