Evanston, IL On Wednesday , a local activist and actor joined volunteers to cook for the homeless on the North Shore to inspire others to help those in need.
A group called The Lunch Squad has been preparing meals for Evanston Inn guests in the Lake Street Church kitchen for two years.
Gail Doff and her team volunteer with the Homeless Connections program as part of the charity's mission to feed and serve 4,000 people who are homeless and affected by homelessness.
"There's definitely a need on the North Shore. Homelessness can happen to anyone through a series of bad choices or failures," Doff said.
They were joined on Wednesday by a cast member who can be seen on Empire, Shame, Chicago Med and more, but Andre Bellos' current mission is encouraging people to volunteer with "Do the Right Thing."

“I go to different nonprofits and bring light to the darkness and ask people to volunteer. "The lack of volunteers is serious," said Bellos.
At Connections for the Homeless, they need more volunteers. People come to help at Thanksgiving, but the work of feeding people goes beyond that.
"It's always great when people want to help and think about others during the holidays, but it's good to remember that those other people are hungry the other 364 days of the year," Doff said.
People can help prepare meals in the church kitchen, cook dinner at home, or find something that's right for you.
"Basically, my message is that volunteering is good. You don't have to do anything special to volunteer. Volunteering can start at home and we all have something to contribute to this world. We have to find out what it is and try,” Bellos said.
For soldiers this means preparing food for the body and soul of those in need.
