January kicks off the new year with great activities for kids in Pittsburgh. These January events offer Pittsburgh kids plenty of opportunities for families to have a whole month of fun.
January 3-8. Hairspray, Benedum Center
You can't stop the Beat. Can a big girl with big dreams and even bigger hair (thanks Ultra Clutch!) make a difference? Follow the adventures of Baltimore teenager Tracey Turnblad's search for love, acceptance and social change in this heartwarming musical that will leave you rocking in your seat. Based on the 1988 John Waters film, Hairspray's Broadway tour continues the thriller that won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. Suitable for children over 8 years old. Tickets start at $35.
January 4, 11, 18 and 25. seedling Winter Wonderland , Pittsburgh Botanical Garden
It's no wonder that the Pittsburgh Botanical Garden considers nature an essential part of a child's development. The four-week Seedlings Series, directed by Sarah Levinthal, is guaranteed to spark creativity and imagination. Every week there is a different theme dedicated to winter in the garden. Children will look for animal tracks, explore different habitats in the park, read stories and have free time to play. Designed for children aged 3-6 years. Registration costs $15 per week.
January 7 and 8: Great Greenburgh Train Show , Monroeville Convention Center .
It's never too early to start planning next year's train show under the Christmas tree. Be inspired by more than 80 model trains from around the country on display at the Great Greenberg Train Show. Join the workshop and learn with free demos designed for railway beginners and experienced designers alike. Admission is free for children 11 and under, $12 for adults on Saturday (includes Sunday admission) and $11 for adults on Sunday.
January 11 : Dragons and mythical beasts, Benedum center .
From the creators of Dinosaur World Live, you can be sure it's an incredible show. The realistic puppet show "Dragons and Mythical Beasts" brings monstrous creatures to the Benedum Theatre. This Olivier Award-winning show comes straight from London's West End. Brave children will come face-to-face with fantastic monsters such as the giant stone troll, the mischievous Tooth Fairy and the lovable unicorn. This magical adventure will reveal dark secrets, myths and legends. Be careful not to wake up the terrible dragon. Suitable for all ages from 3 years to adults. Tickets from $29.
January 13-16. "Fanny. The Music and Life of Fanny Lou Hammer," August Wilson African American Cultural Center.
Civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer was a courageous leader in the fight for women's rights and the right to vote, in her native Mississippi and beyond. Based on his life, this contest is filled with songs of spirituality and protest. This inspiring production is presented in partnership with three Pittsburgh organizations: City Theatre, August Wilson African American Cultural Center and DEMASCUS Theater Collective, as well as True Colors Theater Company of Atlanta and Actors Theater of Louisville. Tickets cost $40.
January 14 : "Lama Lama - Live!" Beham Theater
Bay Area Children's Theater comes to town with a beloved story that adds a little bedtime excitement. At the end of a day of adventure, Baby Lama is tired and wants to wear red pajamas. But where does the mother call? This hilarious new musical will make children laugh and warm the hearts of all mothers in the audience. This children's theater series is suitable for children aged 3 and up. Tickets cost $12.
January 14-16 and 21-22 . Winterfest , Pittsburgh Frick
Combine gloves and jackets and wrap the kids in warm scarves. it's winter festival time. Ice skating on an artificial ice rink covering Great Frick Park. Hop on a horse-drawn carriage and ride around campus. Take a walk outside in the winter and check out the blown glass exhibits. Enjoy live music while you find hot food, or head to The Café at the Frick. Prices vary by activity.
January 20-22. The World of Automotive Wheels David L.
Kids obsessed with their Hot Wheels collection will love seeing these life-size cars, trucks, and motorcycles. World of Wheels cars are bright, shiny and absolutely beautiful. The 50th Anniversary presents the Zinger as a revamped Corvette, dragster and dune buggy. Celebrity guests include Fons (Henry Winkler), Jeff Lutz of the Street Outlaws and Funny Car Champion Robert Hite. Tickets are $8 for children ages 6 to 12 and $23 for adults.
January 20-29. Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad , New Hazlitt Theatre.
The Prime Stage Primes series is designed for elementary school students to spark a love of theater and reading. Her latest production follows the courageous journey of Harriet Tubman, sometimes called America's Moses, and her work to free and save slaves. The performance is full of spiritual songs. A presentation that includes full touch is planned for January 28th, and an audio description presentation will be released on January 27th. Tickets from $8.
January 24: Machine de Cirque at La Galerie , PNC Theater in Pittsburgh .
Based in Quebec, Machine de Cirque presents a show full of humor, amazing acrobatics and honesty. La Galerie finds seven acrobatic clowns and a musician visiting a monochrome art gallery. Creative license comes into play when they shoot an explosion of color. Players trip, stagger and fly through the air with popcorn. Dizzying feats, surprising discoveries, poetic liberties and lots of silly fun await you. Suitable for all ages. Tickets start at $35.
