The novelist was named the first poet of the university's botanical garden.

Tim Relph, novelist and poet, received a 12-month residency at the University of Leicester's Botanic Gardens.

He would also write poetry for Audby Gardens and Knighton's Attenborough Arboretum.

He said he was "surprised at the garden" the first time he visited.

Relph said that when he learned that the poet was living at the cathedral, he emailed the university about possible residency.

The avid gardener says she hopes her stay will inspire others to try writing and spark an interest in gardening.

She hopes to create works inspired by gardens and arboretums that encourage people to visit and think about nature and plants.

"My job is to spread the word about gardens and the joys and benefits of gardening," she says.

Relph, who lives in Draycote, Derbyshire, says gardening has helped his mental health.

He said: "It can help you relax, exercise and raise awareness of the natural world, weather and environmental issues, and given the cost of living crisis, it can also help provide food."

The Botanical Garden supports research and teaching at universities, as well as educational programs for all ages.
