DETROIT - Huron-Clinton Metropark will be Ralph C. Wilson Jr.'s first location in the city of Detroit . s 2.5 hectare water park. Centennial Park at the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy on the Detroit Riverfront, opening in 2024.

The water park will be one of four major attractions in the park, which will cover 22 acres on Detroit's western edge. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Huron-Clinton Metroparks announced Tuesday that they will have walking trails, seating and educational signs, along with outdoor classrooms for scheduling events.

"Metroparks form a dynamic green belt of active and natural spaces around the metro Detroit area, but for decades there have been gaps in the presence of metroparks in Detroit," Huron-Clinton Metroparks Director Amy McMillan said in a press release. "We are finally making progress in bridging that gap and establishing a physical presence that citizens can interact with on a daily basis. We know we still have a lot of work to do, but we appreciate this strong partnership helping us move forward toward this goal.

The city opened a nearly $60 million park in May that will stretch 5.5 miles along the industrial riverwalk west of Jefferson Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard. In addition to the water park, there will be the William Davidson Sports Center, the Delta Dental Playground and the DTE Foundation Hill.

The new Huron-Clinton Metroparks Water Garden is the latest in a partnership between Metroparks and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

In 2020, they launched a pilot partnership to increase access to new recreational programs and activities for families living in cities and suburbs. Since then, they have developed "robust programming" and collaborative outreach efforts, including the Swim D program that has helped Detroit youth learn to swim, according to the press release.

"The partnership between the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and the Huron-Clinton Metroparks reaches thousands of people in our region," Detroit Riverfront Conservancy President and CEO Mark Wallace said in a press release. "For more than two years, we've brought Detroiters into the Metroparks and connected Metropark visitors to the Detroit Riverfront. That number will continue to grow when we open the Ralph Wilson Park Water Garden in 2024."

Earlier this month, Metroparks announced strategic goals for the next three years, including plans to increase access and physical presence of Metroparks services in Wayne County and Detroit.
