A neighbor with garden tools cornered the suspected thief until Nanaimo police arrived on the scene.

According to a police press release, the search for the suspect ended around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, after Cedar City residents apprehended the suspect at a car dealership in the 1700 block of Woobank Road. using garden tools.

The series of incidents began around 3 p.m., when several officers responded to a 911 call after a Yellow Point Road homeowner reported that she had been confronted by intruders in her home.

"The fight began when the suspect sustained a head injury and lost a large amount of blood," the message reads. "Despite being injured, the suspect managed to escape."

The policemen searched the area without success with the help of a police dog.

Shortly before 6 p.m., more 911 calls came in from neighbors on Woobank Road, about a mile from the original incident, reporting a bloodless man trying to enter an apartment building.

“This time, several neighbors got together and waved various garden tools, preventing the person from escaping,” the report says.

Police detained a 34-year-old man suspected of committing robbery and attempted robbery. He was taken to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment of his injuries and then transferred to the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment where he spent the night.

This individual, who does not have a permanent address, also has four outstanding warrants for his arrest in North Cowichan. No charges have been filed in connection with the two attempted robberies and the incidents remain under investigation, police said.

"We are pleased that the suspect has finally been located and that no homeowners have been injured while trying to apprehend him," Const said. Gary O'Brien, spokesman for RCMP Nanaimo, in a press release.
